I am making several spartan shields for myself and my officers to carry and I went through alot of Ideas before I came up with this one, which I think is going to do a good job. It's made from 2 saucer sleds and 1/4" plywood.
I trim the edges of the saucers so that they stick out straight from the saucer and cut a ring of plywood to fit over it. Then I put the outer sled on, and put washers and bolts around the ede of the saucer. I'll be bringing it out to the monster game, it'll be painted and have the arm mounts on by then!

I stuck one together to snap a few pics, this is the 2 nested saucers pinching the plywood rim I'm gonna try out. I threw a few screws in so I could look at it but the 2 sleds will be glued together and there will be 10-24 machine screws, washers and locknuts around the rim of the saucer. My biggest concern is a good barrage, which I plan on taking, seperating the rim from the saucers. Light package though.
It's nice that the handle mounts will be mounted to the inner saucer and will not show from the front!

It's 33 inches now, perfect for me! I can barely contain myself from chuckling evilly any time I get in view of them....I'm a tall boy and it covers from my head to my beltbuckle!

I'll put regular mounts on this test model.

More pics to follow as I put it together and paint it!

It looks amazing. I might have to copy you on this one. Great job on the design. I will have to check it out at mmg.

If it dose not take the hits well you can add a layer of camp pad, yoga mat or EVA foam in to the layers bettwen the sleds. This should cushion the outter layer and spredout the impact and won't weight much.

Just a thought. Hope to see you soon.

I put the arm loop on today. I've been sizing it up and I'm pretty happy with how it went on!
This is the inner saucer, it won't show the blue backer(a thicker saucer I had donated to me gave it's life, that others might go on), when the shield is fully assembled.
Another blue piece will back where the handle is.
The handle is next, then I can assemble the whole thing and paint it!!!

Thanks, I also might put some FRP bathtub paneling to it! See you at monster I hope Johnbo!!!!

EDIT: Handle's on! Threw it together to check it out. Heaven with a handgrip! I'll run some bolts around the rim of the saucers to anchor the rim and it's ready for paint!

It's 33", 5.5lbs of awesome.
I had an aluminum saucer back in the day I used, this thing is on a whole other level.

I'll have it at the Monster!

For any who may try this do not get the Paricon flying saucer sleds! Get the Emsco Snow Racer Disc! Fortunately the flying saucers can be used for the inner shield, but they are both hard to paint and not tough enough without modding, IMO.

I was concerned seriously about the lack of duct tape in this project, fortunately it comes in red!!!

Well Done Agent, Well Done!

I am more prone to the rectangle shaped shields but that is awesome. I may just have to bust one like that out too. I have two of those sleds and many times have picked them up and put them to my arm and said na to small. But you found the perfect work around. Love it.

The square in your video is rocking too, Scout!!!

Take up the Shield!

I think for those using regular markers, the square is the ticket. It assists in reload as the marker can be grasped in the shield hand and paintloaded with the other. The curve of my style makes it more of a pistol players only design. No problem for us of course!!

Has anyone started working on shields for 300 '12?

FYI, I have a couple of round plastic snow sleds to donate, for DIY shields. I'll bring them up to MMG, and leave them in the VIP shack.
